By: Shea Gyngell

If you really love coffee, don't settle for a boring, everyday coffee cup. Sip your brew like a celebrity from your own personal mug.

Coffee mugs have evolved from simple vessels to an array of styles to meet the preferences of all sorts of coffee drinkers. Typical, dainty coffee cups can be nice when company comes to visit and, as a matter of fact, proper coffee cups are preferred by the "polite society". No mugs for this crowd, thank you very much. In less formal social settings, however, coffee mugs are accepted and preferred for imbibing in greater quantities of coffee.

You can shop for coffee mugs in virtually all shapes and styles, and made from different types of materials. But the one thing they all have in common is their primary purpose of holding coffee, tea, steamed milk or hot chocolate.

Materials that are generally used for the production of coffee mugs could be glass, porcelain, plastics, and metals. The shapes that mugs can be modeled into are even more varied. Coffee mugs of recent times have been ideal souvenir items, marketing and promotional tools, suggested gift materials, and novelty items. For many coffee drinkers though, it is just a simple coffee mug to hold the coffee in and sit lazily early in the morning to enjoy the morning sunshine and get perked up for the day ahead.

Porcelain coffee mugs

Porcelain is the most common choice of coffee drinkers, because it's an affordable material that keeps coffee warm a little longer than metal and plastic mugs. The downside to porcelain is that it's quite breakable. This versatile material allows manufacturers to design mugs in all sorts of fashions, from pretty and dainty and macho and masculine. Some porcelain coffee mugs are available with matching porcelain covers to keep the coffee hot and prevent spills, but these lids are not attached.

If you like to have your coffee "on the go", or you drink coffee at your desk or around equipment, you might pick up a lidded mug.

Coffee travelers

Traveling coffee mugs are designed for the coffee drinker who needs to avoid accidental spills in the car. A travel mug is usually made of a combination of metal and plastics, with insulation to keep the coffee hotter, longer. Travel mugs often have a plastic interior liner, while the outside of the mug is manufactured with stainless steel. Some lids are made with a drinking spout, while others have a hole in the spill-proof lid. These types of mugs are best while driving and drinking coffee at work. This type of coffee mug closely resembles a vacuum flask.

When enjoying coffee outdoors, you can use a travel mug or another, more traditional type of mug. Tin coffee mugs are reminiscent of campfires and the great outdoors, and are enjoying a comeback in the company of today's more versatile options.

Coffee mugs can be plain or fancy, simple or ornate. There are ornamental mugs in all sorts of shapes and sizes that, aside from being a functional, can also be used for decorative purposes or organizational cubbies for pencils and other small items.

The puzzle mug is easily the most novel of all the novelty mugs. It takes a lot of skill to drink from a puzzle mug, and you should expect to wear a few splashes of coffee before you learn the secret. With concentration, intuition and manipulation, however, you will eventually solve the puzzle and enjoy a spill-free brew.

Coffee mugs are great ways to enjoy your coffee, especially if you are a coffee lover. The quantity of coffee they can hold can be as much as 20 ounces.
